The holidays are upon us which brings in the hustle and bustle of the busiest season of the year. While you’re focusing on decorating the house and getting your holiday shopping done, be sure to take precaution and take care of your dog’s needs as well. Here are a 5 helpful tips to remember for a safe holiday season with your pooch!

  1. With all of the activity around the household during the holidays, it’s recommended that your dog get a good amount of alone and quiet time each day in order to keep them stress free. Take your dog for a long walk or play with just them in the yard for at least half an hour every day to release pent up energy.

  2. Some Christmas decorations can be extremely harmful for your dog if ingested such as tinsel, pine tree needles, ribbons, garlands, ornaments and other small objects. Make sure to keep these kinds of decorations far out of reach of your pooch so you don’t have to worry about them getting their paws on them.

  3. Water in the bases of natural Christmas trees can sometimes contain anti-freeze, a chemical which smells appealing to your dog but could kill them. Cover the open water areas in the base or place the tree in a room your dog doesn’t spend much unsupervised time in to prevent them from tasting it.

  4. When putting up Christmas lights with the use of extension cords, be sure they’re out of sight and reach of your dog or puppy so they won’t be tempted to chew on them.

  5. There are lots of people who love decorating their homes for the holidays with plants and flowers, but many of them are actually harmful for your four legged friends. Holly leaves, mistletoe and poinsettia petals are all extremely poisonous to dogs, so put them in high places or refrain from displaying them in your home all together.

Keep these holiday safety tips for dogs in mind this season in order to relax and enjoy the festivities with your loved ones, including your canine pal!
